Name Variants

The name(s) you see in your personal profile are initially synchronized from the HR system. However, since your name may appear differently on publications, it is important to add variants to ensure Pure can find and correctly attribute all your work. As automated search tools use these variants to find your publications, it is important to keep this up to date. Having a complete set of name variants significantly improves the accuracy of import candidates from sources like Scopus and ORCID.

Name types in Pure
  1. Base name (HR-synced): Your official name from the HR system. This is not editable in Pure.
  2. Default publishing name (user editable): The name that will be automatically used when you add a new publication. This is very useful if you prefer to publish with, for example, only one initial.
  3. Former name (user editable): Add this if you have previously published under another name.
  4. Known as name (user editable): A preferred display name. This name will be used throughout the Pure interface and on the public Research Information portal, overriding your base name.
  5. Portal sort name (user editable): Used to correct sorting issues for lists on the portal, especially for Dutch last name prefixes (e.g., for “van der Veen”, the sort name would be “Veen, van der”).

Please note: Each name variant type (known as, former, portal sort) can only be added once.
