🗣️ Conference contributions
This page covers how to correctly register or verify all conference-related items and activities: proceedings, papers, posters, talks, organization, participation, …
Similar to 📃 Journal Articles, the University Library should perform the initial registration for formally published conference proceedings (e.g., those in book series, special journal issues, or directly published by larger groups like ACM, IEEE, etcetera). Your role is to check, correct, and supplement these entries, and add any that were missed. For more details on what & how to fill in the key fields, please take a look at the 📃 Journal Articles page. Details specific to conference contributions will be discussed on this page.
For contributions that are not formally published (e.g., a poster or abstract given at a conference), you will need to add the record yourself, as these are generally not easily findable for the library staff.
Choosing the correct category
The category you choose in Pure has a major impact on how the output is counted in official evaluations. The possible choices are listed below, starting with the most common one.
TODO: Add screenshot for “Choose submission” wizard showing paths being selected, as in QRC p.15/16.
- Is your contribution published in a book and/or conference proceedings?
- Use the category: Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution.
- This is by far the most used category for conference proceedings. When in doubt, use this category.
- Is it a paper, poster, or abstract NOT published in a book, journal?
- Use the path: Research output → Contribution to conference → Paper / Poster / Abstract.
- This category should be used for non-paper entries.
- Is your contribution published in a journal? (e.g., a special issue)
- Use the category: Research output: Contribution to journal › Conference article.
- This item type is rare, and should only be chosen in very specific circumstances.
Do not forget to link the item!
A conference contribution registered in Pure must always be linked to two other entries in Pure by creating Relations between the items:- A host publication (the book or journal it was published in, if applicable).
- An event (the conference itself). You will need to search for the conference event in Pure or create it if it doesn't exist.

What about other parts of a conference: talks, workshops, ...?
If you presented at a conference (as a visitor or speaker), hosted a workshop, organized it, or anything similar, you should register this separately as an activity.
- For participation or organizing:
- Activity: Participating in or organising an event › Participating in a conference, workshop, …
- or Activity: Participating in or organising an event › Organising a conference, workshop, ….
- For talks and presentations:
- Activity: Talk or presentation › Oral presentation
- or Activity: Talk or presentation › Invited talk
- Oral presentation is the most commonly used category here.
- Any accompanying paper, poster, or other documents are research output, which is described above.
